For each of the past three years, I have played Monday-morning quarterback with a day-after column for Mobile Marketer looking at mobile elements of Super Bowl ads. Despite a huge, captive audience that actually eagerly anticipates these commercials, for mobile marketers, the overarching theme has been “missed opportunities.”

02.07.12

By now you’ve all probably heard me evangelize about using mobile as a way to reach and engage with listeners. This time around, I’d like to talk about another way to use mobile to your advantage – for internal communications. Let’s be frank, how many of your employees do you think are checking their work email on a Sunday night? But what if there is an emergency – an “all hands on deck” sort of situation that needs immediate reaction. Seeing that we as Americans are rarely more than arms reach from our mobile phones, mobile is a quick and effective way to reach those within your organization.

02.06.12

It’s the morning after. Regardless of who you were cheering for in last night’s Super Bowl or what you think about the commercials shown during the game, it’s clear that media is changing how advertisers are marketing and to whom they market.

02.06.12

Mobile media mavens were on high alert during this year’s Super Bowl, as this was the year when everyone in marketing became acutely aware of the role devices now play in “second screen” experiences in the living room. How did the advertisers respond to the knowledge that a majority of viewers likely had their phones or tablets ready to activate the right on-air message? Hipcricket CMO Jeff Hasen weighs in.

02.02.12

Longtime critic of mobile marketing (or the lack thereof) during Super Bowls past Jeff Hasen, CMO, Hipcricket says, “we will look back at this as the year of the Super Bowl Mobile. But I don’t know if this will be the way brands will use it going forward.” It will be interesting to see if the various audio recognition apps synchronize accurately amidst the uniquely noisy Super Bowl viewing environment, he says. And in the end it is important that mobile marketing plays well in this first widespread mobilization of the biggest ad day of the year. “We need the agency and the brand folks to say that we finally did use mobile well and had a great experience,” says Hasen.

Besides the QR code on specially-marked boxes of Tylenol, consumers can also text the keyword TYLENOL to short code 30241 to connect to the content. “Consumers often enter stores considering a product, then decide in the aisle after they look at price, possible alternatives, and information available," said Jeff Hasen, chief marketing officer of Hipcricket, Kirkland, WA. "Successful brands are making it easier for customers to make choices," he said. "Having bar codes at the shelf is often a good way to go, especially if they are within a broad mobile offering that gives shoppers the ability to act on their terms. Some will engage via scan, while others will look to get smarter through mobile web, SMS, or an app, for instance."

As more consumers engage through mobile devices marketers are looking for ways to engage, too. Whether through apps or mobile websites consumers are looking for content and information and three new options could help brands give consumers what they're looking for.

Now, I don't know a lot about marketing, but my guess is that if the CEO of Kroger looks at the results of the campaign and sees that I used 80% of the coupons I receive, he's going to keep sending them just to get me into his store, where I'm likely to buy other higher-margin products. This is the sort of program that Augme Technologies (OTC: AUGT) designs. But it doesn't use the post office, which is expensive, slow and unreliable. Instead, it builds offers like these and sends them out through another channel entirely -- the cellphone.
